Generative Artificial Intelligence

School policy and grade-level guidelines for responsible AI use.

Destiny School has developed guidelines for the responsible use of generative artificial intelligence tools by students and staff. These guidelines ensure that AI tools are used ethically, safely, and in ways that support learning.

Student Guidelines — Grades K-4

To support age-appropriate technology use and digital learning practice, students in grades K-4 are not permitted to use artificial intelligence (AI) or applications at this time. Access to AI technologies is restricted to approved grade levels as outlined in school guidelines.

Student Guidelines — Grades 5-8

AI Use Rules — Traffic Light System

Red Light — AI Not Allowed

All assignments are Red Light by default. Using AI on a Red Light assignment is academic dishonesty. This includes essays, reading summaries, math homework, and test responses.

  • Submit AI written text as your own work
  • Use AI on tests, quizzes, or assessments
  • Ask AI to solve math problems you turn in as your own
  • Use AI to write full essay drafts or conclusions

Yellow Light — Limited AI Use Under Specific Conditions

Your teacher specifies exactly how AI may be used for that assignment — for example, brainstorming or grammar checking. The thinking, decisions, and final writing must still be entirely your own work.

Green Light — AI As A Classroom Learning Tool

  • Use AI to draft, brainstorm and generate starting points
  • Ask AI to explain a concept you do not understand
  • Use AI feedback to revise and improve your own writing
  • Study with AI as a question-and-answer tool

General AI Use Rules

  1. 1

When in doubt, assume Red Light. Ask your teacher before using AI on any assignments. Uncertainty is not a justification for use.

  2. 2

AI cannot do your thinking for you. Using AI to generate final answers, paragraphs, or essays you submit as your own is plagiarism, even if no text was copied from another student.

  3. 3

Never enter personally identifiable information (PII) into any AI tool. Do not type your name, student ID, school address, or any classmate's information or photos.

  4. 4

Fact-check everything AI tells you. AI can generate convincing but false information. Never cite AI as a source. Verify claims using reliable references before including them in any assignment.

  5. 5

Be transparent about how you used AI. On Yellow Light assignments, be prepared to document and explain to your teacher how and when AI was used.

  6. 6

Use only school-licensed AI tools. Free tools may not meet school privacy and compliance requirements.

Violation of these guidelines may result in disciplinary action in accordance with the school's policies and procedures. Consequences may include the loss of technology privileges, academic consequences, school disciplinary action, and when applicable, referral to law enforcement or other authorities.
